DOES THE APPEARANCE OF FOOD REALLY MATTER?

Updated: Dec 9, 2024

A 2018 study from the University of Edinburgh showed that over 50 million tons of food waste was thrown away for cosmetic reasons.

To combat food waste a number of supermarkets offer a series of so called imperfect goods for a discounted price. This can range from wonky carrots to berries, turnips and potatoes.

My Leftovers decided to find out if people really do care if the carrot, they are having for dinner is a bit wonky or straight.

  • - Probably that one. It just looks better, said one girl asked, pointing to the straight carrot.

The second person asked also quickly pointed to the straight carrot. When asked why he shrugs.

  • - I do not know. It just looks more… carroty, he says with a small laugh.

The next few people asked had the same answer straight away and the consensus is clear People do seem to prefer the “good looking” vegetable over the wonky one. However, when asked why people are divided. Some mentioned practical reasons like the straight one being easier to peel, while other just did not like the look of the wonky one.
